River in the Sky
River in the Sky By Ankon Mitra | Electronics and Motion Design by Xperiential Design This kinetic installation transforms archival maps of the Ganga and Alaknanda rivers into a living, unfolding sculpture. Hand-folded origami elements, inspired by Prashant Lahoti’s collection at @kalakritiarchives, are brought to life through a network of custom motors, pulleys, and motion controllers, enabling multiple choreographed animations. Each movement is precisely programmed, allowing the origami to fold, ripple, and bloom in sequences that mimic the flow and contours of the rivers themselves. The integration of sensors, motorized drives, and interactive electronics ensures a seamless dialogue between material, motion, and space. The work bridges archival reference, contemporary design, and kinetic engineering, turning historical cartography into a dynamic, experiential artwork that merges craft with responsive technology.
